"A picture is worth a thousand words...", and after the wedding day, your pictures will be the lasting memory you will have of this special day.  This is an area where quality is important, and professionalism is a must.   This person will be making the memories for you that you'll revisit throughout the years.

It is very important to find a photographer and/or videographer that is willing to work with you and your ideas.  If they're set in their ways, or don't listen to your ideas, check with another one that will.  Having good communication is important here.  This way both sides know what the other is supposed to do.

These professionals have the experience to make the memories come out on film or tape.  They should work with you, and provide some help for the 'basics' that need to be photographed or captured.   Many now offer photos on CD and ordering by electronic means.... be sure to ask about it.

The list below has some important tips to take with you when meeting with potential photographers/videographers

  • Shop around....interview more than one person for each service.
  • If the photographer/videographer is from the same place, is it the same person.  One person can't possibly cover both pictures and video at your ceremony and reception.
  • Is the person you're meeting with the person that will be doing the work?  If not, set up a meeting with that person as well.
  • Insist on seeing examples of their work.  If they're professional, they should have some.  Remember, they're not going to show you their "oops" shots, but check for quality and developing clarity.
  • Do the pictures 'come to life' as you see them.
  • Ask for references.
  • Do they charge by the hour, the number of photos, or by the job.   Make sure they're available long enough to get all your pictures and events on film and/or tape.
  • Do they do this part-time or full-time.  Do they have an office.  (Many photographers and videographers work from their homes, it's not unusual, if so, ask to meet them there and see it...make sure it appears professional and organized)
  • Have they ever worked at your ceremony or reception site.
  • Do you get to keep the 'proofs' and when will they be ready.
  • When will the ordered pictures be ready?
  • What packages of pictures/vidoes do they offer, and at what cost?
  • What options for your photos do they offer.  Can they put them on CD, Zip Disk... with today's technology, it worth asking.
  • How much of a deposit do they need? When is the balance due?
  • What type of guarantees do they offer?
  • Do they work as a team with a videographer/photographer?
  • Can they provide disposable cameras for you at a discounted price?
  • ONCE YOU HAVE HIRED THEM......
  • Make sure you have a contract signed detailing the above.  BE SURE TO READ THE FINE PRINT.
  • Review the time schedule and date of your wedding day with your photographer and include this in the contract.
  • Are formal pictures going to be taken before of after the ceremony or on a different day all together?
  • Make a list of specifically what pictures are important for you to have, i.e. Grandma with Mom and bride etc.
  • Very Important-- RECONFIRM THE DATE AND INFO WITH THEM AT LEAST 2 MONTHS BEFORE THE WEDDING.  THIS GIVES TIME...JUST IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG
  • VERY, VERY IMPORTANT... DO THEY HAVE A "BACK-UP" FOR THEM IN CASE OF SOME TYPE OF EMERGENCY.   It's unusual, but if they have an emergency, get hurt or sick, or something catastrophic happens, you could be out a photographer/ videographer, and miss capturing these memories.

Talk to the professionals listed on this page.   They can help to make sure your memories are captured.
