Marriage License Laws in Ohio

Be sure to contact your local courthouse or consult your phone book for the office that handles Marriage Licenses for current information.

bulletNo blood test or doctor's examination is required in the State of Ohio.
bulletThe couple must apply together in the county which you reside.  You license is valid to be married in any Ohio County.  Out of state applicants must apply in the county in which they will be married.
bulletYour Ohio license is valid for 60 days, and there is no waiting period in Lucas County.  This can vary in other Ohio counties.
bulletA valid state ID or driver's license is acceptable for valid identification.   Verification by the Social Security office may be required in some counties.
bulletA birth certificate is required as Proof of Age for all applicants in Lucas County, who have never been married.
bulletThe legal age of consent in Ohio is 18 years of age.  There are provisions for marriages of persons over the age of 16, but you will need to contact the license office directly for more information.
bulletIn the case where either person is divorced, the divorce decree is required in Lucas county.  If there are previous divorces, papers are suggested but not required.
bulletWidow/ Widower-  A certified copy of the death certificate is required in Lucas County and most Ohio counties.
bulletCost--    The license fee in Lucas County is $42, cash only.

Both offices are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday for license applicationsAccording to each office, Fridays are the busiest days to obtain a license.  If planning to get your license on a Friday, they suggest planning for up to two hours to get your license.
