The wedding cake... it is one of the first things
that people notice when walking into your reception hall. The choices for wedding
cakes are endless when you consider the type of cake, the design of the cake, and the
decoration of the cake.
Some brides and grooms opt for a
combination of two different type of cake batters when choosing their cake. This allows to
please several different tastes of your guests. Maybe spice cake and chocolate, or
any other combination.
The design of your cake will help
determine the overall cost and the need for set-up at your reception. If you will be
having a fountain, lights, or a pedestal cake, make sure the hall has a "safe"
place to put the cake. (The photo above is from my wedding,
right before a 5 yr old bumped the table, and destroyed our cake.)
You don't want some unsuspecting guest to 'bring down the cake' while they're admiring
it.
For the decoration of the cake be
sure to check with your baker about what they think would work best for you. They
can co-ordinate colors, fresh flowers, and even ceramic figurines into your cake.
Ask your florist if they can provide the flowers for your cake. They are the
experts, and should help to find the perfect cake for your special day.
Below is a list of helpful items when
choosing a cake and a baker to make it.
 | Is the baker experienced with making and designing wedding
cakes?
Most will be, but if a family member or friend volunteers, make sure they can
do it. |
 | Do they have an album of pictures of wedding cakes they have
designed? |
 | Can you sample the different flavors of cakes? (This
is one of the best parts) |
 | Will there be an additional charge for your preferred decorations
like
flowers, figures, fountains, etc.? |
 | Make sure to have your photographer take a keepsake photo of your
cake right at the start of the reception. People will be admiring it, and
sometimes they get clumsy...odd..but it happens. |
 | What time will they be at the hall to deliver the cake? And,
are there
any special items they will need for the hall to have ready? |
 | Be sure to tell your baker how many guests you will be having.
They
can help determine how much 'cake' you will need. |
